Executive Summary
The objective of this project is to demonstrate the electrochemical exfoliation of graphene and laboratory and pilot scales, scale the continuous production of graphene in larger volumes, and demonstrate proof-of-concept for high performance respirator masks and nano-biosensor applications. This project was awarded as part of the NIST Rapid Assistance for Coronavirus Economic Response (RACER) Grant Program.
Technical Challenge
- Converting batch process to a continuous process
- Dispersing graphene in solution for long-term shelf life
Potential Impact
This project will (1) stimulate the U.S. economy by enabling entirely new products and (2) make a substantial contribution to prepare for, mitigate and respond to coronavirus, its variants, and other human health crises. This project aligns with the intent of the Manufacturing USA Innovation Institutes: to improve US manufacturing competitiveness and increase the production of goods manufactured predominantly within the US; stimulate US leadership in advanced manufacturing research, innovation, and technology; and, facilitate the transition of innovative technologies into scalable, cost-effective, and high-performing manufacturing capabilities.
