Optimization & Analytics Software

The Optimization Firm was launched in 2001 to commercialize optimization software developed by Professor Nick Sahinidis and his research team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2001, the company made its flagship product, BARON, available under GAMS. BARON became the first commercial optimization software to find global optima of nonlinear and mixed-integer nonlinear problems with deterministic guarantee. Over the past 20 years, The Optimization Firm has advanced the field of optimization by creating algorithms and software that enable science and engineering. Today, BARON remains the world-leader in global optimization technology. In 2017, an academic study found that BARON is 3-10x times faster than other MINLP solvers and solves 20% to 300% more problems than other solvers. Over 600 organizations now license BARON in more than 50 countries. In 2018, the firm introduced ALAMO, a code for learning models from data. Created by leading experts in machine learning and optimization, ALAMO uses innovative optimization and sampling technology to generate interpretable models, while at the same time ensuring that the model is accurate and as simple as possible. ALAMO is already used by hundreds of engineers, managers, and data scientists worldwide. The Optimization Firm is currently based in Atlanta and remains affiliated with Professor Sahinidis, who is currently at Georgia Tech.
